Some travel eSIMs include calls and SMS, but many are data-only. A data-only eSIM can connect WhatsApp and other internet apps; it does not, by itself, provide ordinary mobile calls or SMS. For those, buy a plan that explicitly includes voice and text, or use a separate active phone line.
The important question is not simply “Does this eSIM have a phone number?” A number may support incoming texts without outgoing SMS or cellular calls. Check the exact package, the countries where it works and the numbers you can contact.

Data-only versus calls-and-SMS eSIMs
An eSIM is the digital form of a SIM. The package attached to it determines the services you receive. “Unlimited data” describes a data allowance; it does not automatically mean unlimited phone calls, unlimited SMS or a local number.

For example, a family that already uses an internet messaging app may mainly need data. A traveller who must call restaurants, landlords or a tour operator’s landline should check for included cellular calling, rather than assume every contact uses the same app.
Which travel eSIMs include calls and texts?
These examples show the differences to look for. They are not a ranking, and a brand name alone does not establish what an individual package includes. Open the linked policy and the exact offer before buying.

Incoming and outgoing allowances can also differ. Orange says receiving texts does not consume its included SMS allowance; its treatment of incoming call minutes depends on whether you are inside or outside the European zone. Those are Orange’s rules, not a universal rule for all travel eSIMs.
Can you use WhatsApp with a data-only eSIM?
Usually, yes. Calling and messaging inside internet apps uses an internet connection rather than an included cellular voice or SMS allowance. Both parties need a compatible way to communicate, and availability can depend on the destination and network.
Changing the SIM used for internet access does not mean you should register a new WhatsApp account. Keep your existing account if you want to keep using it. New registration or account verification may still require access to the registered phone number; a data connection alone cannot receive an SMS addressed to that number. A successful app call also does not prove that your phone’s normal dialler can call a landline. Some internet-calling services sell calls to ordinary numbers, but coverage, charges and number support belong to that separate service.
Can a travel eSIM receive bank SMS or verification codes?
A travel eSIM will not automatically receive codes sent to your existing phone number. If your bank sends its code to your home number, you need that number’s service to remain reachable, or a different verification method supported by the bank.
Even a travel plan with incoming SMS is not a guarantee of bank-code delivery. Before relying on it, ask whether the specific number supports verification messages and whether the bank accepts that number type and country code. Do not replace an account’s registered number with a temporary travel number just to test an eSIM.
- Check your bank’s supported sign-in and recovery methods before departure.
- If you plan to receive SMS on your home line, confirm overseas availability and charges with that carrier.
- If available, set up the bank’s app approval or another supported backup method while you still have normal access.
- Distinguish receiving a code from sending a reply: a receive-only number cannot be assumed to support both.
These are preparation checks, not a guarantee that every bank or roaming network will deliver every message.

Use travel data while keeping your home number
On a compatible dual-SIM phone, the data line and the line used for calls or texts can be different. A useful setup is travel eSIM for internet access and your existing line for messages addressed to your home number, provided your carrier supports the required service abroad.
On iPhone
Choose the travel eSIM as the mobile-data line in Settings. Review the default voice line separately. If you want data to remain on the travel package, review automatic data switching rather than assume the phone will always use that package. Apple’s Dual SIM guide explains the separate controls.
Keeping the home line active can still incur roaming charges. Turning off its data roaming is not a blanket block on chargeable calls or texts. On Android
Look for SIM preferences in your network settings. On Pixel, Google documents separate choices for data, calls and texts; options depend on the device and carrier. Seven checks before buying an eSIM for calls and SMS
- Plan type: Does the offer explicitly include voice and SMS, or only data?
- Number: Is a usable number included, and what is its country code?
- Direction: Can you receive and send SMS? Can you receive and make cellular calls?
- Calling destinations: Are calls local, regional or international? Check the numbers you actually need to call.
- Allowance: How many minutes and texts are included, and what happens when they run out?
- Verification: Is the number suitable for your intended service? Treat bank and short-code SMS support as a separate question.
- Total trip cost: Add any calling add-ons and home-line charges to the travel data price.
Consider two travellers on the same trip: one only needs maps and family app calls; the other must call local businesses and receive messages at a home number. Their cheapest suitable setup can be different even if their data usage is identical. Compare the services you need before comparing price per GB.
Frequently asked questions
Does every travel eSIM come with a phone number?
No. Many travel packages are data-only. A number displayed in device settings is not proof that it supports calls, SMS or verification codes.
Does unlimited eSIM data include unlimited calls?
No. Data, voice minutes and SMS are separate features. Only count calls or texts as included when the exact package explicitly states that they are.
Can I call a hotel with a data-only eSIM?
You can use a supported internet app if the hotel offers that contact method. Calling its ordinary telephone number needs a voice-enabled line or a separate internet service that supports calls to telephone numbers.
Can I receive texts on my home number while using travel data?
It may be possible with an active home line and a supported dual-SIM setup. Confirm the home carrier’s overseas SMS availability and charges; the travel data package does not itself receive texts addressed to your home number.
Is an SMS-receiving eSIM enough for bank verification?
Not necessarily. Delivery depends on the number, provider and sending service. Confirm eligibility and arrange a supported backup sign-in method before travelling.
