Travel eSIM setup checklist

Check compatibility and carrier lock, understand activation timing, and choose the right data line before using a travel eSIM abroad.

By CheckeSIMRates · Updated

Before buying, confirm that your exact phone supports the chosen eSIM and is not locked to another carrier. After purchase, follow the provider’s installation and activation instructions. A general checklist cannot replace the terms for your specific plan.

Before you buy

Install with a connection you can rely on

Keep the order confirmation and provider instructions accessible. Use the provider’s supported installation method, such as its app, a QR code or manual details. Arrange a reliable internet connection for the installation process. If the provider allows installation before departure without starting validity, doing so gives you time to resolve a setup problem.

Label your lines clearly, for example “Home” and “Travel,” so you can recognize them in network settings. Do not delete an installed profile to troubleshoot unless the provider confirms it can be installed again.

Choose the right line for mobile data

Select the travel line for mobile data when you want to use that plan. Calls and texts may still use another line. Keeping your home line active can incur charges under your home carrier’s terms; check those terms separately. Apple explains the travel-line choices in its international eSIM guide.

On Pixel, Settings, Network & internet, SIMs contains the data-line and roaming controls. Google documents separate defaults for data, calls and texts in its mobile network settings guide. Other Android phones may use different menu names.

Enable roaming on the travel line only as instructed by its provider. Do not assume that the correct roaming setting for your travel eSIM is also correct for your home SIM.

If you cannot get online

  1. Confirm you are in a supported destination and within the plan’s validity.
  2. Check that the travel line is enabled and selected for mobile data.
  3. Check the provider’s roaming, network-selection and APN instructions.
  4. Check whether the allowance is exhausted or activation is still pending.
  5. Contact the provider with your order reference and the exact error. Keep activation codes private.

After the trip

Restore the data line and network settings you intend to use at home. Check whether you need to retain the travel profile for a top-up or future trip before deleting it.
